Course Title: General Chemistry (32 class hours)

Instructor: Professor Li Xinxue / University of Science and Technology Beijing

Course Introduction: This course is primarily designed for international students in China, integrating rich elements of Chinese culture alongside knowledge learning. It can stimulate international students' enthusiasm for learning. Chinese students participating in the course will also benefit greatly. General Chemistry is a basic natural science course for non-chemistry and non-chemical engineering majors, laying a solid foundation for cultivating well-rounded talents with comprehensive qualities and innovative awareness.

Course Content: The course consists of four chapters: Chapter 1 covers the basic principles of chemical reactions, including calculations of reaction heat, determination of reaction direction, chemical equilibrium, and chemical kinetics. Chapter 2 covers solution chemistry, including colligative properties of solutions, acid-base equilibrium, buffer solutions, complex ion equilibrium, precipitation dissolution equilibrium, and precipitation conversion. Chapter 3 covers electrochemistry, including galvanic cells, electrolytic cells, and electrochemical corrosion and protection. Chapter 4 covers the fundamentals of material structure, including electron configuration outside the atomic nucleus, periodic law of elements, chemical bonds, intermolecular forces, and crystal structure. At the same time, it incorporates chemical knowledge from technological frontiers, social hot topics, daily life, and Chinese culture, showcasing the beauty and charm of chemistry.

Target Learners: This course is primarily designed for international students in China and is suitable for first-year science and engineering undergraduates in non-chemistry and non-chemical engineering majors, requiring a certain foundation in the Chinese language and necessary basic chemistry knowledge. It is also suitable for short-hour general chemistry courses offered to Chinese science and engineering undergraduates in non-chemistry and non-chemical engineering majors.
