From February 26 to March 18, 2024, the University of Science and Technology Beijing held the Japan Short-Term Chinese Language Training Program. Japanese students from the Chinese departments of Kyoto Sangyo University and Kanagawa University came to China to participate in the program. The program included Chinese language course study, visits to Chinese cultural sites, and tours and exchanges on China’s modernization and development.

At the opening ceremony, Liu Dongyang, Deputy Director of the International Student Center, extended a warm welcome to the students. She encouraged them to make good use of the three weeks, attend the Chinese language courses diligently, and improve their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. She also encouraged them to actively participate in Chinese cultural experience activities, learn knowledge through firsthand experience, and witness development. She expressed the hope that the students would enjoy their study and life at the university and wished them a successful completion of their learning tasks.

During the three-week program, the students carried out a series of activities: they visited the campus and the University History Museum to learn about the university’s history and become familiar with its study and living facilities; they exchanged with students from the Japanese Department of the School of Foreign Studies to promote mutual learning among cultures and mutual integration of civilizations; and they attended classes at the School of Foreign Studies, taking a class together with Chinese students to experience the classroom atmosphere of a Chinese university.

They attended Chinese language courses and, under the guidance of Chinese teachers, experienced the charm of the Chinese language and improved their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. They also actively engaged in Chinese calligraphy, Chinese painting, and Chinese kung fu experience classes, learning new knowledge and acquiring new skills.

Through hands-on practice, and under the guidance of their teachers, they learned about historical and cultural sites such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and the old Beijing hutongs, deepening their understanding of Chinese culture through practice.

The students successfully completed their learning tasks, gaining both new knowledge and new friends. At the closing ceremony, the teachers bid farewell to the students one by one and extended their best wishes to them.

The launch of this short-term Chinese language training program for Japanese participants marks an effective initiative to put into practice the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important replies to students of our university. It carries great significance for telling China’s stories well, making the voice of China heard, and advancing people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries. Our university will continue to deepen and substantiate short-term programs for international students in China, tell China’s stories well and make the voice of China heard.
